Karissa Anne Marie Haniuk

Karissa is such a happy little girl - and she has learned to make very communicative sounds around her present trach - she is due to receive a fenestrated trach as soon as the proper size can be found. She is also now eating pureed foods - and likes sweets the best! Karissa is the victim of a month-long coma (4/29/97 - discharged on 6/4/97) resultant from bacterial spinal meningitis - when Karissa was discharged the discharge papers indicated in a permanent vegetative state - we are blessed - in no way is that the case - we do not know, however, the extent of future disabilities, but she continues to make daily progress. The dedication of her parents, Shannon and Mike, and her five year old brother Justen who can make her laugh like no one else - are pillars of her determination to survive - (and of course the love of all of her grandparents!!)
