Growing and Thriving with a Tracheostomy is a comprehensive set of materials designed to teach families to care for a child with a tracheostomy. The book and video can by used in combination or the book can be used alone. The manual and video were designed to meet the following criteria:

· Guide for both the initial skills families learn and as a long-term reference for follow-up care and decannulation.

· Format encourages active parent involvement in the learning process.

· Easily understood by parents with varying educational backgrounds.

· Can be individualized to meet the care requirements of children of different ages and varying needs.

· Contains a speech and language development section.

The easy-to -use manual encourages parental involvement through a workbook format in which parents take notes based on cues provided in the text.

The video includes live action with graphic illustrations of all tracheotomy care skills, basic anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, and tracheostomy tube information. All live instruction is provided by parents of children with tracheotomies. The video is designed to be used in conjunction with the manual.

The Teacher’s Guide includes guidelines for the patient education record, a tracheostomy teaching skills worksheet, a patient education record, and an emergency supplies bedside verification list. The Teacher’s Guide materials may be duplicated. They are intended to guide the professional teaching the family through the key points of the process.
