Aaron's Tracheostomy Page
Celebrating 10 years
1996-2006

How Aaron's Tracheostomy Page came to be:

When Aaron first got his trach, I did not even have internet access and the world wide web was new and only a small part of the bigger "internet"; most people did not even know it existed. In 1994, my husband bought a used Tandy computer and we surfed the web at 14.4 kbs. By 1995, we were active on AOL message boards and a few listservs. I learned some basic HTML using plain text, as there wasn't much software for building web pages back then. I started with a simple homepage and in 1996, I started working on Aaron's Tracheostomy Page. When I did a search (I think I used AltaVista back then) there was no information about pediatric tracheostomies, almost nothing about tracheostomies at all, except maybe a dictionary definition. Taking what I knew from nursing, what I'd learned caring for Aaron and some basic HTML skills, I started putting some information online. The site has grown over the years and we are now celebrating our 10th anniversary!

Statistics:

Average number of hits per day: 6,000 - 7,000
Number of registered Message Board members: 700
Number of messages on the Message Board: 50,000
Number of Listserv members: 200
Number of "Kids with Trachs" bios: 432

What Aaron's Tracheostomy Page means to parents:

"The message board has gotten me through the fear, the anxiety, the mourning, the anger, the doubt, has brought me huge smiles, fits of laughter, and sometimes huge tears. I honestly don't know how I would have gotten through it without all of you....thank God I didn't have to."

Val - Matthew's mom

"You guys are my lifeline and best friends, and I always know someone here will understand when no one in my "real" life does. I've told tons of moms about it, nurses, doctors, therapists, anyone and everyone. It is such a valuable part of my life. I always say, I'd be lost without it."
