Okay-My husband and I started talking last night about Mitchell's infection and being on antibiotics again! We change his trach monthly-and are thinking maybe we should do it more often.

We change the trach at least every other day. Only had an infection in the trachea itself (trachitis) twice in 4 yrs. I just find it is better for Alli to change it more often, and she doesnt mind at all. Deb

We change Will's trach at least once a week, sometimes twice a week. Just depends on how gross it is, sometimes even trach care can't help! He is getting a little harder to change these days, he wants to rollover and get away from us, so it takes two of us now. Will hasn't ever had a trach infection, (knock on wood). Sabrina

We change monthly, but Tristan has never had tracheitis to my knowledge. He's had many bouts of pneumonia and ear infections, but no tracheitis. I wouldn't mind to change more often, but his pulmo says monthly is often enough if he's not to junky.

I didn't vote because we have never had an infection.

Drew - Twice weekly change - never had an infection
Cookie - Once a week change - never had an infection
Adrian - Once a week change - never had an infection (but has only had his trach since January).

We use polysporin on the entire neck of the trach before it is inserted with each change.

We change the trach weekly and we've never had an infection (I'm knocking on wood as I type!)!

The only infection we've had was mrsa a week after leaving the NICU in the area around the stoma. We do have yeast flare up pretty regularly but also only around the stoma--we use nystatin twice daily around the stoma for that.

We change the boys' trachs every 3 weeks (I voted monthly) with NO infections.

My friend changes her daughter's every week and she has frequent tracheitis.

I think it must depend on the kid and his chemistry. I just can't imagine what else would cause it. It's not like we do anything special.

Do you give Mitchell acidolphilus? My boys get it twice a day. # times of they're on antibiotics.
Also, we've been giving an extra dose of Vit C at night.
