Unhappy

My daughter got tobramycin nebs twice a day for a week, and she got a really bad rash around her stoma. Â*She has had the rash for about 2 weeks, and it's not going away. Â*We took her to the ped, a few days ago, and he put her on a corticosteroid cream, it doesn't seem to be helping.
I think it looks like yeast, it is small red bumps, and it is spreading all around her neck. Â*
Can tobramycin cause yeast infections? Â* Â* And if it does, can it get in the airway? Â*What happens then?

I don't know. Brian usually gets pretty irritated around his stoma whenever he is sick. Looks like yeast at times. I don't know that I have atributed it to Tobi or just the extra moisture from increased secretions.

OMG!!!! MY daugther went on Tobi last week. And since she has been on she has started showing a rash... Started in a small area on her stomach and now a week later it is all over... I think I need to stop this medication just to see if it is.. Thanks soo much. I will let you know what happens.

Dee,

Sometimes Tobi can keep these kids from needing regular antibiotics and can be very effective. Give your dr a call and see if they think it can cause a rash. I think what we were talking about is redness around the trach site.

It was yeast, the pulmo told me the toby can raise the risk for yeast infections. I think in our case, it started out just red irritated skin, and the yeast just had the perfect environment to grow. Now we are back on toby, so I hope the rash doesn't get worse.
I agree, I wouldn't stop a med like that without asking the doc about it. My daughter is not having an allergic reaction or anything, she is fine, just has a very bad rash around her trach.

Well, here comes by profession talking, (I am a pharmacist). Any antibiotic can cause a yeast infection. Even though antibiotics are great at helping our little ones, since they kill bacteria, and they don't know the difference between good and bad bacteria, they just kill them all. Thus, when your body's good bacteria is gone, other things can grow easier, for example yeast. At least though, with yeast infections, a lot of them will go away with just a little cream. Hope that helps. Sabrina

Madisyn takes Tobi in her neb twice a day, and we have had no problems. She has been on it for about 2 weeks.
