I was wondering where I could find information on children requiring a EGD before going forward and doing the Laryngotracheoplasty (LTP). My ENT wants the EGD but my GI seems hesitant. I know if my son has acid reflux it can ruin the his chances of a successfull LTP. I just haven't been able to find anything online to support this. It's probably just my searching technique, because I've had my ENT and many parents with trached children agree on the neccesity of the EGD.
Thanks

My son Mario did. The only reason it was done was because the ENT stated that my son's airway issues were because of ongoing reflux even though an UGI was normal. His scope showed persistent reflux/incomplete airway healing, feedings were held except via G-tube and Zantac was given for an additional two months. His G.I. disagreed with the necessity given the fact that an UGI was normal and the reflux should have been resolved with the Nissen. There were differeing opinions. Given my son's clinical picture at the time we went with the ENT's assessment. ( His oxygen sat's were felt due to reflux as per the ENT but the G.I. felt it was due to ongoing laryngotracheomalacia, they can control reflux with medications but the degree of malacia that my son had wouuld only get better with time)

I would have the reflux reevaluated before the LTP. The dr that told you reflux could compromise the success was right on target. And, it seems a lot of GI drs dont like to admit they havent "fixed" the reflux. Deb

We haven't had it done (EGD) ...but why is your GI hesitant? Does he/she feel it's too invasive?

He seems to be sensitive about putting Luke under for the procedure. He says because he'll be put under again for the surgery.

If your child is possibly refluxing, you would want to really eliminate that as a possibility. I would push for the scope. As for anesthesia, I know this sounds bad, but I wouldn't worry. If your child has had a few procedures and handled the anesthesia well, your chances of complications greatly decrease. We have truly lost count of all the different "sugeries" our kids have had and they have done well each time....
