Today Zoe had her first accidental decann. I funny thing is, as long as she has had her trach I have thought about that happening all the time and thought I would be to terrified to be able to help her out. The idea of it happening scared me to death. But, when we noticed her trach was out and her color wasn't so good I did what I had to do completely calmly (I am the furthest thing from a calm person in general). I freaked out a little afterwards, but it really didn't affect me they way I thought it would.
Zoe is fine, in fact it only took her a few seconds to recover-she had her chin down (she has a chubby baby double chin) over her stoma, so she wasn't able to breath for a few seconds. She doesn't require O2, so the insurance company won't let us have a decent pulse-ox. We have this dinky thing that doesn't have an alarm that take about 1-2min to actually start working. Her color was a little off and we weren't able to check her sats-but her color came back to normal in about 5 seconds.
Just wanted to share our experience today with you all.

Well done! Its sounds like you handled yourself like a real pro. Stupid insurance companies and their stinginess. Maybe you could use this situation to emphasize your need for an adequate pulsox monitor. I apologize for my "strong" words. I am just not very happy with insurance companies at this moment. Have you used the wonderful "liability" word at all? Maybe now's your chance. Ok, I digress. Seriously, you did a fantastic job. Congrats and give yourself a pat on the back. I remember the first time it happened to us. I was terrified. I was shaking for several minutes afterwards. Not fun.
Hope it never happens again!

You handled it like a pro. Not that it is a good thing it happened, but it does give a person more confidence. Well done!

It sounds like you did a great job. I am very proud of you. I always worry how I will react as well, it is nice to know that in the face of fear we can remain calm. Good for you. I hope that, that is the last time that you will have to do that. I am also glad that Zoe is okay.

wow! I am impressed, that is also my biggest fear and I am hopeful that if the same thing ever happens to Max I will be as calm and collected as you were...
do you know how it came out? I am always worried about the trachties falling off!

A nurse and I were cleaning her stoma, around her neck, and changing her ties. All of a sudden her trach was out. I am assuming it came out during the tie change, but I'm not really sure.

Oh, PS...our pulse ox has stopped working before and actually the best indicator I use is a pink face!
