Hi guys, I don't post much, but look around alot...

Question-my son has been trached for 4.5 years, and we have never seen this--blood in the thick suctioned secretions. Not alot, but enough to make me a bit freaked, and it has happened more than once. He is not sick, but is having more secretions. He is not uncomfortable, seems ok when being suctioned. Also, it is cold weather and pretty dry here...

We actually have an appt. with ENT tomorrow, so we can see if it is anything in the airway, but I am just wondering if any of you have had this experience.

Let me know...
Peace,

Grace used to show blood in her secretions when her trachy was very dry or when she was starting/finishing a cold. The best thing to do is use more saline when suctioning and keep an eye on your son's temperature. Good luck. Olga

Blood always freaked me out too. It was a rare thing for Gaithy, and I never got used to it. I would agree that it's probably just the dryness, and adding more saline might help. Do you guys do any nebulizer treatments? You could do some saline ones if so. It's great that the ENT is checking him out tomorrow! That's good timing. I wouldn't worry too much if it is only a small amount, and hopefully the ENT will be able to give you some good info about this.
