Default Decan: Good News/Bad News

Finally heard back from Dr. Jacobs and he reviewed the sleep study and confirmed we're good to go on the decan. Needs to do one last bronch, a plexy suture, and then the decan that afternoon with a 3 day hospital stay.

The bad news: First available date is November 4th. Both in terms of having to wait 2 and a half months, but also getting so close to cold and flu season. He says nothing to worry about, but I can't help it.

Trying not to push the office too hard to move it up, since they've always been fairly accomodating. But on the other hand, after his LTP they were continually adding follow up bronchs to his schedule with only a week or 2 notice. So there must be some room to play on his schedule.

I guess for now I'll just focus on the good news. Had hoped to have him start kindergarten without the trach, but I guess 2 months isn't too bad.

Congratulations on the fantastic news!!!

My daughter was decannulated in January and things were fine. We were in the PICU overnight, but mostly kept the door closed. (We weren't really thinking about germs, she was just so LOUD once the trach was out!) She didn't catch a cold for months after. The great thing is you'll have the trach out- which personally was like a germ superhighway to us- before cold/flu season REALLY ramps up!

Thanks. I've heard that about the trach and germs from a lot of people. I guess we've been super lucky because in 5 years with it, my song has gotten maybe 1, sometimes 2 colds a season and both pass within a few days with nothing more than rest and maybe the occassional neb treatment. And this is with him not only have a big sister that goes to school and gets germs, but also going to school himself for the past 2 years. I guess maybe because he's been capped during the day for that time, that this helps somewhat.

Congrats!!

I'd also see if you can push the appointment up.

BUT...
Mitchell was decanned in December and he did fine. The first cold/illness is scary no matter what month. Yes there are more cold/flu germs but just be a hand washer and maybe be extra cautious that winter. It actually made me feel good to get through a flu/cold season right away-made my summer much more relaxing knowing he could do it if he got sick.

Good luck!!!
