Default Pulled trach apart

My daughter has a bivona flextend trach and she actually pulled it so hard that it torn into 2 parts. Has anyone else had this happen? She usually pulls off her vent from her trach and I guess our nurse had the vent on the trach so tightly that when my daughter went to pull her vent circuit off she actually pulled her trach apart. She was smiling and playing with the metal coil that is inside the flex part. The tube was still in but the other part was in the trach circuit. She was in no distress but wondering if anyone else has had this happen to them?

We had that happen with an Arcadia (which is very close to the same as Bivona), it was terrifying (Hunter had JUST come home from the hosp, and that caused major distress)... our RT emailed Arcadia, and they redesigned the trachs after that point (we were one of a few families it happened to)... we took pics and had the serial number of the trach which we forwarded to the company....

We use the bivonas as well but have never had this happen. I would file a complaint with the company.

Call Bivona, they are required by federal law to track such failures of medical devices. Believe me they want the hear from you.

Interesting you say that , I had , as many here can attest to , an about 10-12 messed up 3.0 Bivona flextend trachs and I contacted the company via email and calling only to be brushed off repeatedly. (Thanks for the concern... they will contact me for more information... etc )

The inner circumference of the cannula got smaller further down the tube. I usually used a 8fr to suction and could hardly get a 6fr in , with saline.

Almost killed my baby , I had the bad trachs and the papers from them but neither the company nor anyone else seemed too concerned ...

We've never had this happen, but I'd look into contacting the DME and the manufacturer. While they may not always take the issue seriously, at the very least you want it addressed. The DME can't really "do" anything about in the sense of product quality, but they can field some of the concerns... and if other parents have the same issues, then they'll know.

Lacy,
That happened to us last summer. The dr had never seen it before and he sees like all the trach kids here in the Dallas area. You and I are both in Texas I see. I did call my DME company and they said it is for sure a defect and they sent me a new one ASAP....ours wasn't old at all. My son just pulled on the end and the tube part that is inside was completely apart and the flap and ties still intact. So, I'm wondering now if you and I got the trachs around the same time. But they told me it was for sure a defect...its so scary to think that can actually happen.
