Default blowing bubbles

Hi i'm not sure if this belongs in OT but can you trached child blow bubbles? T only seems to be able to do it though a straw type contraption that you put your mouth on the end of the straw and blow (i'm guessing theres more of a seal that way) but a regular bubble wand appears impossible for him, however another trachie parent told me their child can blow bubbles.
Just wondering

Thanks

Alexander can't yet, but it's something they're working on in speech therapy.

Sam never could, in fact he's just learning now and he's been decanned for 18 months, it probably depends on the child, and the condition of the airway - I am really hoping Sam can blow his birthday candles out this year.

Mackenzie can't, but she desperately tries. All the air ends up rushing out of her trach because she doesn't understand to part her lips a little.

ETA: That's something you'd have a better chance at with a speaking valve of some sort.

My daughter can blow bubbles, and she is trached due to severe stenosis. It took her a while to learn. It has a lot to do with how she shapes the lips, and how close she is to the wand.

yeah we are trying with a speaking valve

thanks everyone for your replies glad to see we aren't the only ones as the other trach parent made me feel like he SHOULD be able to do it

with his pmv, Joseph can blow out candles.. he is working on bubbles, but doesnt blow strong enough to make actual bubbles.. he blows the solution away from the wand some, but then it just sucks right back on.

Default blowing bubbles

Tommy's true vocal cords are sealed shut 100%. So, he's 100% trache dependent. He learned how to rip off his artificial nose and blow bubbles from his stoma sight, but we work the wand so he doesn't end up inhaling bubble solution.

But when he had his airway reconstruction and had an opened airway for just a few short days, he quickly learned how to plug his trache with a finger &/or he'd do a chin tuck to block his trache to force air out his mouth so he wouldn't leak out his trache.

And he does blow out his own birthday candles using his trache, but we give him his own cake with the candles on it

Think it all depends on the child's airway and oral skills.

Good luck and get the video camera ready for when it does happen!

Jaelyn can sometimes blow bubbles with her trach in place, although her attempts are inconsistent.
