Question Does anyone know....

One of our nurses was telling me about one of her other patients mom. She said that the mom is in some kind of program that pays her for taking care of her disabled child. The nurse didn't know what the name of the program was. I'm curious about it and want to get more information. I remember our social worker mentioning it, but since we didn't qualify for medi-cal she said we most likely wouldn't qualify for this program. Anyways, does anyone know the name of it (I'm in California, don't know if that makes a difference)?

From what I've read here, it's just a CALI thing and it's part of being in the Medi-Cal program.

IHSS might be it. I recall seeing that on here from time to time too.

There are moms form Calif on this board who do receive some sort of financial payment for caring for their children. Hopefully they will speak up and help point you in the right direction.

It is IHSS. It take MONTHS to hear back from them & get any payment. We get minimal hours, but it is something. They have a new program so you need to be fingerprinted & get background checked before you can be "hired" to work for your child. Keep calling!!! If you already had a SW visit then it is just a matter of paperwork approval. If no SW then you need to keep calling...but it takes A LONG TIME!

It is called IHSS (In-Home Supportive Services) and eligibility for it depends on the family size and income. Aly is an adult and qualifies as such. She also receives SSI.

Over the years when our family size and income counted she sometimes qualified and other times did not. Your hours are based on the needs beyond regular caring for a young child. Diapering, for instance, isn't considered until age five, I believe, as a covered task. Being income eligibility based you are required to report any changes in your household income or size within ten days of it occurring. You will be required to pay back any monies received while ineligible. They will enforce this, even if it's their error.

I would suggest contacting your county office, ours is the Kern County Aging and Adult Services office. Once you are medically eligible, which can take a long time, even longer for minors as the cuts have been severe, you will have hours determined and offered an opportunity to select a provider. As someone else mentioned the providers must all be fingerprinted and background checked by the DOJ at their own expense.

Best of luck to you. Be persistent as it can be very helpful.

Looking at the eligibility requirements, it looks like another program we wouldn't qualify for.

Honestly i don't mean to be so negative, but i have no idea how i am going to keep this up taking care of Evan. I only work a few hours a day, it is our only income, and Evan gets no assistance other than his formula and medical supplies ( i still have to purchase a lot of stuff he needs that the ydo not cover) My mom watches him while I work, but I am up many hours every night taking care of the vent and him. I need more sleep and more hours working how to do both? I will become to tired to care for him at all.
