Default How do you suction?

Do you use the suction kits that come with the gloves or the plain ole suction catheters? My DME sends me the kits with the gloves, but I don't always use them- I think that is where my cold came from (Addisyn's RSV)

We have the kits w/the gloves. I usually only use 1 glove and then have a "dirty" hand.

I use the glove on the hand that is holding the suction tip. I leave my other hand that controls the amount of suction ungloved. I found that the glove can get sucked into the control hole and thereby leaving me less control over the strength of the suction.

We don't do anything special anymore. We just use clean hands. We hardly ever use the catheters either. Maybe one a day if that. We just tip suction and keep it clean with a cover......we change it every day. So far so good.

Us too, this way, I didn't have to run and wash my hands every time I needed to sux. Inevitably we would be in the middle of a diaper change or something where my hand might be dirty, but couldn't take the time to wash, so I'd stick on the gloves quick.

we don't use gloves either, and almost never use the long skinny suction catheters. Instead we have these pointed plastic things that kind of look like a mini vacuum nozzle. Sorry I don't know their actual name. Much easier to control than the skinny floppy knd and no numbers to have to squint at in the middle of the night!

We also don't use gloves any more. We try to use hand sanitizer before we suction.

Default suction catheters

At home we use the same suction catheter until anything touches the end that will go down the tube, ie. no gloves, but hand sanitizer when able, but never touching the end of the catheter is the key. The stoma is an open 'wound' and the end of the tube that goes down (to whatever number) is the key part to keep sterile.

In 4 years Mitch has pseudomonas on and off, but we have kept pretty clear of bugs. In the hospital, gloves, new catheters, there are MORE bugs than at home!!! Can't do much to prevent the viral bugs.
