Need help on a big word
OK-got Mitchell's sputum culture back and he has a jungle growing again,
Staph, Strep, Morexcella and another one that I don't know how to spell. I'm wondering if you could help me. It isn't psudomonis-it is something like Setaroph...something and it is a little longer than that. Sorry-just don't know he said them so fast and I was on the phone-usually I'm in the office and I can see them on the screen and ask more questions but had lots to talk about tonight when he called. Anyone have an idea?
What the heck is going on?? Why is he getting all this stuff all the time?? I feel just horrible, like we're doing something wrong. We are clean people and I feel like we're careful with his trach. I guess I just feel like we have to be doing something wrong.
On a side note--now his pulmonologist and ENT are fighting over who HAS to scope him...neither of them want to.
Anyone know of a good ENT or Pulm. in MN?? Mainly Minneapolis/St.Paul or even at Mayo in Rochester?

I don't know the specific bacteria you're referring to, but don't beat yourself. Eric gets tracheitis all the time and nobody can really tell us why. We're clean and careful too and he still gets sick. Some kids are just really susceptible I guess.

The only thing I can think of is staphlococcus (sorry, thats not spelt right), or staph. could that be it?
Don't beat yourself up, I think some kids are more susceptible than others

pseudomonas...very, very common, I can tell you that anyone with a trach for any length of time is going to have some bacteria. Most bacteria love dark, damp places, unfortunately! Most of them are colonized and harmless.
I'm not sure of what you are talking about with the other one.

Oh I feel your pain....Keyan was always growing strange things and it go so bad that they had us consult infectious disease. He explained that as much as the trach is necessary and beneficial it is a foreign body without a blood supply, so even when you use antibiotics, they can't kill what is on the trach. So, his recommendation, get ready for this...was to actually change the trach out every 24 hours to debulk the germs. We decided to give it a try...we keep two trachs in circulation at all times and every night change it for one that has been sterilized. I have to admit, I thought that this was crazy but we have gone from pnuemonis every other month to only every two to three months. I know it is still alot of illnesses, but changing out the trachs has helped. On the first and the fifteenth of every month 2 brand new trachs go into the rotation. It seems really complicated when you try to type it our but it really has not been that bad. I really believe it has made a difference. Now, Keyan grows strange things in other areas of her body but at least it is not the trach!!! Let me know if I can be of any more help.

I really would email Dr. Cotton directly--tell him your story (briefly) and ask him if he has any recommendations in your area. He is very helpful.
I have no idea about the particular bacteria you mentioned. The other ones are pretty common. I think all trached kids are colonized with some sort of nasty bacteria all the time. It doesn't matter how clean you are!

Thanks Kristy,
I just emailed him. I feel bad because I've done it a couple of times. I guess I just feel weird. He really has always been great with responding, but I can only imagine how busy he is-so I feel guilty. Anyway, we'll see what he says-I didn't tell him the dr I was looking at...being I want to just see what he says.
THanks again.
