Default Sprinting

As you guys may know Natalie is sprinting. She stared back in November and got held up a little around Christmas due to being sick. She is up to two hours twice a day. For all those who are doing or have done this can you let me know how it worked for you.

Also what were your kiddos status while sprinting. Natalie needs to be 94 or a above without O2. And her respirations need to stay 80 or less. Natalie does breathe fast at times (really bad BPD) and her pulm group does not get concerned when she gets in the 70's when she is active b/c she can doe this while on the vent too. Her hr never gets too elevated.

Just wondering, especially if your little one had BPD or CLD what it was like for them.

Thanks,
Karen

Our situation is a little different, so I'm not sure if you can really compare. Our daughter was, at one time, on a nasal cannula so she can breathe on her own. She just needs the positive pressure from the vent to keep her lungs open now.

Right now we do rotations of 6hrs on the vent and 10hrs on CPAP. We're still in the hospital so they leave her on for the full 10 unless she starts having really nasty retractions. Mackenzie gets tachypneic even when on the vent with respirations in the 100s.

One of our problems is the temperature settings on the vent vs cpap. The vent requires a warmer heating element, so flip flopping back and forth gets Mac's temp out of wack. (Or at least they're blaming it on the sprinting, we'll see if they're accurate in that assumption.)

Hey Karen...
Great to hear that Natalie is off for 2 hrs 2x a day!!! That is what we did and eventually he was only on his vent during his nap, then we merged the 2 together.

Ayden has always had to be 94 and above OR not working to breath. Sometimes when he is at the 93/94 mark, he works too much or huffs and puffs. I don't track his RR like we did when he was on the vent. He wasn't above 40-50 when we were getting off the vent... but it seems like forever ago, when it has been just 6 months!!

Hope that helps a little!!!
good luck -

Congrats on the sprinting....... were doing the same, G started off the same way, stats have to be above 94, and RR he can run anywhere between 40 to high 70's depending on what he is doing..... G has always been a rapid breather also...... but it is getting better...........
We stared with 1 hr 2X daily and then increased over time until the times merged, he is currently off all day and only on at nights now....... waiting til RSV season over to start working on nights.....
Your best guide is going to be Natilie, go by her signs, they thought it would take us till March to get him off completely during the day, but he decided different, he's always been stubborn, and had a mind of how he was going to do things......
