Rough night
I almost called 911 last night. I have never seen Tommy struggle to breathe like he did last night. I kept hearing him cough off and on all night, but around 5 this morning, I heard him barking and wheezing. I picked him up and his teeth were bared, huge retractions, and barking deep down in his lungs. He looked so scared.
I gave him his Xopenex inhaler and started CPT. When he didn't get anything up, I ran him to the bathroom and turned on the hot water in the tub and sat on the floor pounding his chest and back. I realized he was panicked and trying to breathe through his little pinhole of a stoma. Once he started to relax, he started nose breathing again.
He's still a little junky today, having his moments of fear to cough up his secretions through his mouth. I notice he gets like this when he's tired. I just have to keep him relaxed. If he keeps this up, I may need to call his doctors for advice. He's fine any other time, but sleepy time and can't move his secretions is really upsetting him.

That really does sounds scarey. Welldone though for staying calm and helping him through it. Hope this is not a daft questions but why do kids still have secretions after decan? Does is last long?

I am glad you could remain calm. I guess Tommy will have to learn to completely breath through his nose - it is definitively an adjustement, Tommy will get it very soon - he is a tough and smart cookie

Have you considered suctioning through his nose or into his mouth to induce a cough to get the secretions up?
Poor baby and his mommy. You need your stress level to come down some- a break will be well deserved!!!!!

My understand is we ALL have secretions, but if you use your airway as it's designed they work their way up and become snot (sorry). Someone jump in with a better explanation, please! Deb
