Default G tube stoma

Nate's stoma has always been beautiful (is that even possible??) His GI doc always compliments us and he never had any irritation or yuckies around it. Now it looks like he has a granuloma. I'm sure it's from irritation from rolling/army crawling. But one part of it is bright red and looks like an open wound. It's not really bleeding, but there's always dried blood around it. I clean with peroxide and put gauze over it, but it's not healing. Can a granuloma be bright red and look like an open sore?

Here's some poor quality pictures:

what i think is a granuloma

The red sore

Sorry if you can't see them very good. The lighting was kind of "off" in his bedroom I guess.

Marcie,

Thankfully, in 6.5 years, Jacob has never had granulation on either his trach stoma or g-tube stoma. We also get comments from doctors and nurses about how "beautiful" both are, but I think some kids are just less prone to getting it than others.

Anyways, sometimes Jacob's g-tube stoma will get irritated from being pulled or from him rolling. It will get red and there will be dried blood, but it is not like an open wound. It only lasts a day or two... Sometimes I'll put some AB ointment on it once or twice a day and that seems to do the trick.

Tommy's has never had an open spot, but it does get very red and have dried blood from time to time. I use Desitin around the stoma for a few days and that usually does the trick.

Ayden has never had an ugly G-T site either & we get praised for how good it always looks too(I wonder what they have seen)He does however have a granuloma under the stoma that sometimes gets irratated a pokes through the stoma a bit,it looks like a bright red bubble(doesnt bleed). We use polysporin & it settles back under the skin in a few days.....Angie

Right away when I read your post I too thought granuloma or just irritation from crawling around. I have heard others say they use diaper rash creams. The zinc oxide I guess works wonders!!! But it sounds like you have tried something similar and are still concerned about the "open wound" like appearance and that it still is not healing. I don't want to over react or scare you, but you don't think it's MRSA or the stomach lining coming out of the stoma? (The GI doc at the trach conference talked about such things I know I never would have thought of. So, now I'm peranoid about these things! Don't mean to make you perinoid, too!) I bet it's just irritation and needs a little more time to heal. Protect it good with some foam dressing and creams, and I'm sure it will heal with time.

Would you mind posting a pic of it? Keturah has had many granuloma, but she had one that would bleed and just wouldn't go away with any creams or silver nitrate. The silver nitrate hurt that one and made it bleed more. It turned out that that one was indeed the lining of her stomach. There is nothing that you can do to make it better if that is what it is. Keturah had to have hers surgically fixed. I hope it's just a granuloma! We use triple paste btw for our zinc oxide ointment of choice. We also use Calmoseptine.

Oh yeah....you can also get pH paper strips and test the tissue to see what the acidity levels are. If it is really acidic, it is more likely to be stomach lining.....

Alize occasionally gets a small open area on the g-tube stoma. I usually just put a small piece of duoderm on it for a few days and it's gone. Karen

I'd get in and let the dr see it! It's probably not an emergency but it looks like it needs some RX cream. Deb

Just wondering how Nate's g-tube stoma looks? What did you decided to do? How did it get treated? It looked so painful!!! Hope it's all better!
