Default Giving Meds

We have such a hard time giving Gabby her meds. I have to tilt her head back squeeze her cheeks together and squirt it in a little at a time and while all that is going on she is crying her little heart out. And just when I think she swallowed it, she spits it back out. Do any of you have ideas? The meds she takes are Zantac (which she HATES!) and Motrin or Tylenol for her post op surgery. I feel like I torture her every time I do this.. and it always takes her a while to calm down. If anyone could help Id appreciate it! Thanks!!

Isabel

We have cut a big slit in the hospital binkie and given meds that way. Can you give the meds in a bottle?? I know zantac you probably want before food... would she take an oz of water or pedialyte w/ meds mixed in?
Also, there is a bottle w/ a syringe in the middle:

Since we have a g-tube, everything just goes straight in!

Yeah, this is the only time I've ever felt lucky to have a G-tube. That bottle is really cool!

Hi Isabel. Can you have your pharmacy flavor them? I had the same issue but had our Walgreens flavor her meds with grape and she eats them right up. Insurance doesn't cover it, but it's well worth it.

We had success mixing all meds in a bottle with formula/milk - just enough liquid to make the taste masked, but not too much so that she won't drink it all. Zantac is ok with food/liquid also (at least we had no issues with it for 3 months). Good luck!

I guess I could add her meds to her food. I just wasent sure if diluted them with something else would "ruin" the medicine. But thanks alot!!

Default meds

We always put G's meds in his bottle, he has mic-key but perfers to eat, usually I put it in 10 to 20 ml, and give first, sometimes like with his sodium, I have to switch bottles several times during feeding to get him to take it all. that works for us.

We have G-tube too and since it was placed, we have not given any meds orally.

Yep, it's at times like these you feel grateful for a g-tube. I gave James, Sam's brother some medicine for a cold a while back, and he just threw it right back up!

I agree with the idea about flavoring the meds...talk to your pharmacist, they should be able to help you. We had the same problem before Matthew got his G-tube. As everyone has said with children with G-tubes, all the meds including crushed tablets now go down with ease!
