Allergic reaction or not?what do U think?
Well we were at the ped. for his pre-op apt. & he was completely fine ,Laughing & playing with his ped.& the nurses, excited about the stickers he was given & everything, his ped. said "Ive been meaning to ask you to let me see him drink something" So he gives him a dixie cup full of water (bottled water) & Ayden happily drinks it & asks for more.Well were go down to our car ,not even 5 min. later hes screeming in pain"help me mamma ,my belly hurts!"He was shaking & tensing up ,screeming & crying,Ive NEVER seen him in so much pain before,EVER!So we run back up to the ped. office hes screeming & His ped. quickly gives him something like benedryl(he didnt have ben.)He said it would take 20 min. to work, but Ayden was in so much pain he said to head to childrens,A 20 min. drive felt like an hour,we went through 4 red lights,I thought he was going to stop breathing right then & there,I was so scared,IVE never seen him like this.Shortly after getting to the ER he gets better.X-ray showed a lot of gas ,but nothing major, they call his ped. & say they think gas pain & his ped. said he thinks it was an allergic reaction to the wax on the cup,& tells us to stay away fropm wax untill we get it figured out & do benadryl for 24 hrs.Hes completely back to himself now(this was on fri.)So do you think it could have been an allergic reaction or what?..Angie

Was it regular bottled water or flavored? Does sound like a reaction to something. Karen

Angie,
Wow! I'd say it's definitely a possiblity. That sounds incredibly stressful for all of you. I take it that's the first time he's ever drank out of a dixie cup? I guess really, it's not that different than being allergic to latex. Interesting...
Glad he's better now, though! Whew!
Take care,
Christy

Hmmmm. Wax allergy? I'm not sure. Maybe it sounds crazy but I would guess it was a twisted tummy due to gas that probably was worse before they x-rayed. Especially since the pain was in the stomach. Did he complain of having a hard time breathing? I don't think you said. But even if he did when you're in a ton of pain it can be hard to remember to breath.
One time Steve had such severe stomach pain that he spent a few hours in the ER. It was our wedding anniversary, so you can imagine that it was really bad. He'd had kidney stones in the past, not that I'm suggested Ayden has that, but we had been worried it was that, but we don't think it was. We think he just had a really severe stomach pain. We never found out what it was.

It could be a corn allergy! Many coated cups have corn products in the coating. Have him tested asap! Deb

Corn sounds more likely. Still, severe stomach pain less than 5 minutes after eating something? That would have to be a pretty extreme allergy wouldn't it? The type that causes anaphylactic shock. If it is that severe of an allergy I would agree get him tested asap in case you should be carrying an epi-pen.
