I guess everyone is different. My daughter who is 8 months old took right to the valve. The first time she tried it on she started making sounds and I almost cried! It was such an experience. I will remember it for the rest of my life. She doesn't usually keep it on for more than a few minutes at the time once or twice a day, because I am trying to gradually put it on more and more. I have noticed one thing though - she slobbers constantly while it is on. She doesn't do this without it on. I am talking about wetting the whole front of her shirt. The ST said that she is using muscles in her mouth that she usually doesn't. Does anyone else have a slobberer (sp?) out there? We are also using it as a tool for decannulation. And the first time I capped her after she had worn the valve she didn't even panic, I guess because she was kind of used to the sensation of the air in her upper airways now. All I can say is that it is a wonderful invention and keep on trying. The rewards are great!
