Preemie teeth issue
My son was a 25 weeker and intubated about 14 weeks. His teeth have come in with spaces between them -- they don't exactly look "typical," but the dentist assures me the adult teeth will look fine.
For those of you with former preemies, did you have this experience? What did they look like when permanent teeth came in? Thanks.

Allison was intubated for 4 month or so, her teeth are off color. Also, some of her baby teeth have not come out and so adult teeth have been coming in behind them. We thought she had a second set (Mike's family has a history of this) but dentist says probably not. She is scheduled for dental surgery on March 4th. They will clean, xray, seal and pull the teeth that havent come out and should have while she is under. The dentist hopes that the other teeth will move up by themselves but it will take time to know. Her enamel is very thin from all the meds in the NICU. Deb

Hi,
We have been told that intubation can make teeth come in different than most babies. Kaylie has some issues as well.we are hoping that the next set are not the same. as far as staining of the teeth we were told is from massive doses of a multitude of meds in the nicu, we brush Kaylies teeth alot and she is brushing them as well. she really only has one tooth that is stained , but as far as being crooked and some pointy teeth thats were we are, in fact we go to the dentist next week, feel free if you would like me to ask them anything i will.
Kathy

Nate was just 5 weeks early. He has a lot of spaces but the dentist said it's good because he won't have crowding when the permanent teeth come in. His teeth are discolored but it's just calculus build-up. Again the dentist said it's good because it protects the tooth (but it looks yucky!!). He actually lost his first tooth over the weekend. It just fell out and I discovered it a day later. It was on the bottom, so his tongue protrudes a bit and covers it. They're loose from the pressure his tongue puts on them.

Jacob's teeth are in bad shape from the antibiotics in the NICU, which caused the enamel to not form properly. We just found out this week that he will have to have all of his teeth capped in 6 months to be able to save them, until his permanent teeth come in. I feel bad for him, but it will be better in the long run, plus he'll have nicer looking teeth We've been told that there should be no reason for his permanent teeth not to come in just fine.

ella was never intubated but she was born 9 weeks early, she has gaps between most of hers, not all of them but most of them. She did put a zipper to her backpack in her mouth the other day and the gap between 2 was so big the litlte whole in the end of the zipper got stuck and it was hanging from her mouth! Thank god she had the sense to hold the backpack up and not let it swing from her tooth!

Ayden too has spaces, but I think he also has very small baby teeth. (?) He was intubated on and off for about the first 4 months, so I don't know if that is why or not.

Alize's teeth are pretty good. He was a 24 weeker, vented (I don't know how long) and lots of antibiotics. Go figure. Karen

Kate was a 37 weeker and her teeth are coming in pretty good, if completely out of order. The color looks ok too.
My middle son's baby teeth were like a picket fence, lots of spaces. Our dentist said that's actually better, there's more room for the permanent teeth to come in.
