Default What Does It Mean

Good Morning Everyone. I have a 2 1/2 year old who was trached on June 1, 2007. You know the saying, "Three is a Charm"? Well Jimmy took out his trach for the third time just a little while ago this morning. The first time was on August 5th the second was last Wednesday the 15th. The first time he really scared me. It sounded like he was saying, "Help, Help, Help". I got his trach back in about about 20 seconds. The second time he was sitting playing so nice and I saw his passy on the side on his neck. He was just sitting there playing. It took me a little longer to get his trach back in but once he was good to go he was just a giggling. This time is different. He wanted it out and did not want it back in. I was holding him down when he flipped over and started to take off crawling away from me. He was breathing just fine. I did get his trach back in but he let me know that he was not happy about it. Is he ready to be UnTrached? He wears his Passy Muir during his waking hours and his HME while he sleeps. Thank You so much for your time.

It's hard to say if he's ready to have it out. But if he just got it in June, I would suspect the drs had reason to believe it would be in for more than a couple of months. He might be feeling pretty good without the trach for a few minutes, but after a longer time would become distressed. Maybe it's just a two year old thing...pushing limits, etc. I would make an appt. with your ENT or pulmo and get some advice/answers. Maybe they would have suggestions as how to handle this. Good luck and welcome to the boards!

Exactly what was already said, it's hard to know when he'll be ready, it says on your website his next check with ENT is in October, I would try to have that moved up. I'm dreading the day when our DS figures out he can take his trach out. Do you have his ties nice and tight? I've heard loose ties can encourage them to take it out.

Good advice from the rest. Just remember that 2 yr olds love to freak mommy out. Hope you get good news on the trach removal. Karen

I'm with everyone else too. Definitely put a call into the ent and either speak to them, or try and get your October appointment brought forward. I know some kids pull their trachs all the time, maybe it's just a 2 year old thing. Sam has never tried to take his trach out, I don't know why.

It really depends on the reason for the trach. For example, I will never get rid of my trach because I have it for extreme muscle weakness and lung disease. Does he have any other medical conditions?

It's nice that he wasn't desperate but I would still definitely keep it in until a thorough exam. If you have a pulse ox you could try capping as an experiment...
