Jacob's Hearing Test
Get this - the conclusion on Jacob's hearing by the audiologist - "Jacob is a mystery".
 She said she has only seen one case like him before. Profound hearing loss in the left ear and a hearing aid unlikely to help. The right ear is the mystery. The ABR showed profound hearing loss, but when she took him into the "developmental/behavioural" room for a test while awake, he TOTALLY responded to the sounds with his right ear! This validated what I have thought all along, that he is hearing. She said he definitely has a lot of residual hearing in the right ear, yet is congested again - already and she thinks regardless of the fluid, he has moderate to severe hearing loss, but possibly even better. She said he may also have something going on in the right ear called "audio dysynchronicity". In short, she said he definitely has a lot that we can work with on the right ear and with early intervention, etc. etc., he should be able to learn to speak and communicate orally, go to regular school, etc. etc.  She doesn't think a cochlear implant is the way to go, as a hearing aid should assist him in maximizing the hearing he has in the right ear. She doesn't want to fit him for a hearing aid in the left ear yet, until she knows what is definitely going on with his right ear.In short, she said, "This is a confusing way of telling you this is good news." It was so wonderful and such a relief to see him consistently responding to sound in his right ear! I will keep you posted.

Kristy Nathan is 7! Trached at 2 hours old--laryngeal atresia. Double stage LTP 5/26/06, double stage LTP 1/23/09 and single stage LTP 4/21/09. Airway has restenosed, but we're still trach free 9/2012. Ding dong, the trach is gone!!

Tess-mom to Abigail 9 yrs old. DX Central Congenital Hypoventilation Syndrome and has a pace maker. Abby was decannulated April 15, 2010. She now sleeps with a V-pap machine and mask. Also mom to a fiesty red head named Olivia who is 6. I am the happiest mommy right now, all is good.

Yes - good news, but confusing
 I hate it when doctors say things like that. It's like the ent that said that Sam had an airway 'unlike one he had ever seen before'well our kids are interesting - at least to the medical profession!!  Juliex

Interesting..... I was trying to look up what Jacob has in his right ear... but couldn't find it. For us, they still found that Ayden has moderate loss in both ears w/ the right one being the better of the 2.... so I guess we resign ourselves to the fact that he will need hearing aids for the rest of his life.
We have yet to talk to our audiologist... so I will feel better once we do that.
