Question how do u treat?

Hi everyone
Was just wondering if you could tell me how you treat Psedomonous bugs in your child's trachie or your own. Do you always use anti-biotics? Do you only treat them when they are accompanied with fever and breathing difficulites? When trachie is smelly? Secretions are different colour?
Any replies would be greatly received.

Many thanks
Shona

inhaled tobramycin (TOBI) - 28 days on, 28 days off. Jack was battling pseudomonas for the majority of 2006. He finally kicked it after his spinal fusion surgery -- my guess is because he was on IV tobramycin following his surgery (for infection control and getting rid of the pseudomonas was an added bonus). I know it is difficult to treat and some kids need IV antibiotics.

We only treat Mitchell's if it is problematic. Typically it isn't. We've never done Tobi--we usually treat Mitchell when he has staph and/or strep because they are typically automaticly problematic, but psudo--we just wait and see.

Emma only had it once and was in the hospital so they treated it with antibiotics. As far as I know she has never ahd it since, not sick or stinky or anything, but then again she showed no signs of it at all when she was treated for it either. They gave her vancomycin, which come to find out she is highly allergic to. Probably tobi too, since they told me she may act the same with any med that ends in "cin".

Depends on what else is growing, how heavy, and if Psedomonous is a normal thing a child grows. Ayden has grown it w/ every trach asperate we have had. It's usually mild to moderate growth. Last time (last week) he also grew another gram-negative type of bateria and b/c it was heavy growth of the other bateria, we treated him with Cipro AB. About 2 months ago, he grew some moderate Psedomonous, but b/c he didn't have any colored secretions and there was no fever, no odor, etc, we chose not to treat it.

We also do the Tobi neb, 28 days on and 28 days off. We have been doing it for about a year now. ANd let me tell you , I can tell when we are about to be on our 28 days on again, as it seems she starts to get sick after being off 28 days.

McKenna is colonized with pseudomas and it's usually not a problem unless she has another infection going on.
We don't treat unless she is symtomatic...start to smell that icky sweet smell, the secretions go green, she gets a fever and becomes lethargic, vomiting.
Have done inhaled Tobi...over time became resistant to that, so now if the underlying infection, staph or strep, is not treated quickly (with oral antibiotics)...we usually have to get a PICC line & do IV antibiotics that also treat the pseudo...Zosyn, Unasyn, gentamycin.
Good Luck!

I am also colonized with pseudomonis-it's just always there. For a while I was getting sick a lot. Then I found a respiratory treatment plan: 5 Xopenex a day, Pulmicort 1x, Pulmozyme, and Claritin. Pulmozyme is my life saver-without it I get sick. I have a TOBI prescription on hand that I start if I am sick.

We discussed doing 28 days on/28 days off. But I am allergic to the other med cipro and developed an allergy to penicillin after a long term treatment. I am allergic to almost every antibiotic. The only 3 that I can take safely are Keflex, TOBI, and Rocefin...I really hope I don't develop an allergy to TOBI because it is the only thing that kicks my pneumonia...

TOBI good stuff
