Do any of you have pets? We are hoping to purchase a puppy or young dog because we are buying a home and have really wanted a pet for awhile. I really think it will be a great thing for Gaithy, but my concern is about the different breeds/temperments/etc... I would love some examples from you all who have animals. Has it caused reactive airway or asthma-like symptoms? Any warnings?? Anything!

We have a dog&a cat but they are strictly OUTSIDE!!!! I am very anal about hair off of animals,,The possibility of the hair going in the trach is just too high and not to mention the dander and such that is on animal hair,,,I am a real animal lover so this is hard for me but Celia's health and well being is more important than anything,,Now when Celia goes outside I do allow her to gently pet the cat or dog but that is it and I have Chlorox wipes right there to wash off her hands,,,She loves our dog(Ruby is a husky) and our dog loves her!!! I think that they can have a great relationship without total contact!! Just my opinion Christy, everyone is different and you know what you are comfortable with!!! Good luck and I hope you find the perfect puppy!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks guys.

I really appreciate the website link, and hopefully it will really help in our choice! I'm freaked out about germs too since Gaithy has been around - so it's going to be difficult! Short hair will be a must (even tho I really like cocker spaniels personally). I want a happy, friendly, family dog that everyone loves. We never would've had time to devote to a dog in the last three years, but now I think we'll do fine. Gaithy needs a sibling!! And we're not ready to go thru it all again.

So does anyone else have a cat?
We have a cat and our son will be coming home from hospital hopefully within a few months, do you think if we let the cat in a few hours a day and made sure all the fur was swept up and took measures with trachy filters it should be ok. we plan to keep the cat outside permantley. however if any safe interaction is okay itwould be nice for him.
Any Ideas?

Cool

I had 2 dearly loved cats at the time of Celia's birth and when she got her trach,,I gave them to some very close friends of mine that are cat lovers too,,I was not willing to chance anything with Celia coming home trached!!!! The docs and nurses advised against it(not that they know everything) but I didn't feel comfortable with it myself!!!!

ARGGG,,what a big mistake...

She has a larger breed as well and they are never apart when she is at home....Yep even share the same bed!
