Okay I know everyone has warned me about this but ITS DRIVING ME NUTS!! Matts is constantly pulling out his trach. I have the ties so darn tight I think I am choking him but if I loosen them even a little he pulls it out. I am paronoid in the car because I am afraid I won't get to him fast enough, thankfully my 2 ( almost 3 ) yr old is sitting next to him and yells every time he does it. I had to pull over twice today and he has done it two more times this afternoon. any suggestions??? He started this on Sunday, we were watching the Eagles game and Brad says "whats he freaking about?" I got up and ran over to Matt and he had his trach out, we were all sitting right there so it was quick but I am afraid to even turn my head at this point!!! Is it just an age thing ( he is now 16 mos old) and do they outgrow it ( please tell me they do)
thanks for any ideas!!

I have no advice for you, just wanted to say good job to you for handling this.

Sam has never pulled his trach, or even attempted to, I don't know why. Mind you, I don't think he could get it out if he tried. We use cotton ties which are tied with special knots, plus he has the O2 which we attach around his neck with elastic from the masks, so he would have a really hard job.

Hi Kim,

I sympathise with you on this one! I ended up using scoubis to make trach tapes (I did a flat knot macrame with them) for Angus at the weekend because he was driving me nuts pulling his tube out. I've tried him with trach chains before, but they really do drag on his neck too much with him being on the vent. When he's off the vent, I fully intend to switch to trach chains full time. I've ordered high tensile strength jewellery wire and large lobster clasps (necklace clasps) and I'm going to make some beaded trach tapes for him and see how he manages with them - I just need something that he can't undo himself! Hope you find something that works for you too. I feel you pain babes!

Lots of love,

Kate

One idea to try is taking the mist mask and using a ribbon instead of the green stretchy stuff, and put it on over the trach and pull it up close so he cant get his fingers at the trach. Good luck! Deb

We use the mist collar mask and modify it as a trach guard. Nathan wears the barrel shaped hme all day and then the collar with that, too. Take the mist mask and pull out the tube fitting so it just has the hole, wrap some tape around the hole and then attach it around his neck with velcro trach ties. I'll try to post a picture of what we do now. My husband calls it the Hannibal Lecter collar...Nathan has never decanned but he does "finger" the trach guard quite a bit.

His face is a mess with food but you can see the collar pretty well. Usually we get the tape straighter, but hopefully, you get the idea...

Okay I thought I would put in my two cents. Sebastian used to pull his trach out, hand it to me and try to run off. After running after him the first few times- I just let him run around without it until he realized that he needed it to breathe. I know it was kind of harsh to do but I think he only tried it once or twice after that. He was also about 2 years old around this time. Don't think that I was being mean to him I just wanted him to understand that the trache was important. Anyway- several months after that he started helping me with his trache changes, he would do them himself and could suction himself, so in a weird way it helped out. And yeah they sorta grow out of it.

Mason started doing that and we did everything in the book to keep his trach in. Our only solution was a trach chain. We made it out of a silver necklace. After we put it on, he couldn't get it off, and solved the problem. You might want to try that. Worked wonders for us. We never thought about trach ties again.
