So sorry to hear about Andrew being sick. Although I have no experience with RSV, I just wanted send a quick note to say that I hope Andrew gets better very soon.

Kerry, I am so sorry to hear that Andrew is sick with RSV. My daughter got RSV last February at the age of 2. We were able to keep her at home, but she did require O2 around the clock. She is vented 24/7 anyway, but we did have to increase her vent settings during this period. It took her about 7 days to get over it and before we were able to start weaning the O2 down.

I agree with Kath, with good care and time, they will come out of it. The only reason we kept Hannah at home was because I trusted my nurses over the hospital, and I was able to increase my nursing hours to help us out during this time.

I will keep you in my thoughts and pray for a speedy recovery.

Karen

So sorry to hear your little guy is sick. My prayers for a speedy recovery go out for him and for added strength for you and his caregivers. I see one of the replies said their child had the vaccine and still got sick. I was wondering if all the kids who got RSV had the shots. I know it's something we all probably fear. Best wishes for sure!

Kerry,

I'm so sorry to hear that Andrew has RSV. I don't have any experience with it, but do know that a friend of mine had a healthy, full term baby and this little one was hospitalized for about 5 days.

Hang in there! Lots of prayers for Andrew (and you!).

Corey got RSV twice last winter (he was 9 months and 11 months) even though he did receive the shots. I think the shots made it less severe because we were able to keep Corey out of the hospital both times.

The first time we were working on vent weaning before he got sick and then he had to be on the vent 24/7 for about a month once he got sick, then we started weaning again. The second time, he had only been off of the vent completely for three days and he got it. Thankfully, we were able to keep him off of the vent and just use oxygen to manage. Again, it took about a month for him to return to where he was respiratory-wise before illness.

Grace developed RSV at 6 months. She had it for about a week and when she started to get better she got well really quickly. It is a virus so antibiotics won't work, but she had Calpol to keep her temperature down, humidity, oxygen and Atrovent nebulisers. I was told that having a trachy actually made RSV easier to nurse because you can suction all the secretions out. Having recently nursed Grace through a nasty chest infection (she is a nose breather now) I agree with that remark wholeheartedly. I hope Andrew recovers quickly and you manage to catch up with your sleep. Best wishes. Olga
