Diane, I am not an adult with a trach, but my son Joel is 8 months old and he has a trach due to vocal chord dysfunction as well. His official diagnosis is paradoxical vocal chord movement. Anyway, there are several causes of PVCM and one is that it is triggered by Asthma. (This is not Joel's cause) From what I've researched most causes do not lead tosuch severe dysfunction that it requires a trach. (Some brain abnormalilities do) We've been told that Joel's trach will come out once he's bigger and the vocal chord dysfunction is simply a smaller problem. For him, they are saying one to 2 years. I don't know if this has been helpful or if I can be of anyhelp but feel free to send me a private message if I can help you find more information about your issues!
