Alli had severe vocal cord scarring from being intubated for 123 days (she was born at 24 weeks) and she was able to outgrow it at 20 months she was decanulated after 16 months with the trach. So, it can be done. I would definately get second opinions if you have questionable diagnoses/opinions. Good luck! Deb

24 weeker now almost 11 years old and in third grade!
trach-decanned for good in 2008, gtube, asthma, CP, MR, GERD, latex allergy, osteopenia, aplastic cerebellum, ADHD/OCD, 60 lbs of humor and fiest, 4'4" tall, patient at Shreveport Shriners Childrens Hospital,, and I may be leaving something out but she is happy and growing and the light of our lives! DECANNED 6-17-08

Evan also outgrew his stenosis (caused by intubation) enough to be decannulated (he still has a little residual stenosis). Waiting was hard, but for us proved to be the right decision.
