Hi Sophia,
Get a good night's sleep beforehand! Â*Lily had 2 sleep studies a few weeks ago and it was miserable. Â*Hers was a relatively simple 4-channel study, so the "only" monitors she had were the pulse ox probe, 2 apnea monitor belts, 2 chest electrodes, a monitor taped to her chin to pick up snoring, and THE WORST, a probe taped to her upper lip between her nose and mouth. Â*She totally wigged out with all that and her trach capped on top of it all. Â*We spent 3 hours the second time around trying to get her to stop screaming; at one point we unplugged her from everything (much to the tech's disliking) and walked her around the floor of the hospital in her hospital bed to calm her down. Â*During the study, the techs watch breathing patterns, O2 sats, watch the child sleeping over vidoecamera, etc. and sometimes come in the room to check on things or adjust monitors. Â*Lily's only 10 months old; I would hope that an older child would be able to tolerate things a little better. Â*Of course if you have a 12-channel study you have a lot more electrodes/probes to put up with. Â*

Oh, also, be SURE to take everything with you that you need to take care of Kerrion during the night, including all trach supplies, suction, feeding supplies/pump/tubes, your cap if you have one, smaller size trach if you're downsizing, etc. Â*Ours was an "outpatient" procedure so they had none of the usual supplies you can usually bum off people in the hospital. Â*

I'm not trying to worry you, just be prepared for a long night with no sleep for you, and be prepared to be verrrrry patient with everything. Â*Hopefully things will go smoothly, piece of cake! Â*Good luck!

I'm glad you asked that question!! We were supposed to have a sleep study done last month, but Michael got sick. We were told they would just have a pulse ox and apnea monitor and keep turning the settings down until he could go just on lower settings or CPAP. I think the others are posting about going OFF the BiPAP/CPAP. Sounds like a Frankenstein movie, huH? http://www.twinEnterprises.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

If you ask me a sleep study is one of the worst kinds of torture. Celia has had many and they all were horrible!!!!!! Probes cemented all over her head. Probes on her arms and legs and face. In fact, the one sleep study she had before her trach she coded when they were putting the probes on her head. They had to work hard and furious to get her back. The ones she has had after her trach of course she hasn't coded but the are just pure torture if you ask me. Maybe everybody elses' experience is not so bad. I wish you and Kerrion the best of luck.
