Hello! I'm Leah from Rhode Island. My son Kason's been in the NICU for over 5 months and just recieved a trach for severe BPD. He's on a vent with high vent settings but we're hopeful that as the days pass we can get him down a little. We still have a lot of learning about Trach's to do. We're nervous about home nursing & him coming home. I'm hoping to learn a lot more through all of you since our hospital isnt the greatest at explaining things.

Welcome! We had a similar sort of experience - trach at 5 months, home at 9 1/2 months, but it gets better - especially once you're home. You'll learn a ton on this board, and everyone is super helpful.

Welcome. I am pretty new here too.
My daughter was trached at 4 1/2 months and is still in the NICU since being born in January. We are getting ready to come home any day now and have some of the same concerns about about home care and home nursing.

Welcome! :)
My son wasn't trached while in the NICU but he really honestly SHOULD have been. He just had his trach done 9 months ago at the age of 4.5.
Good luck!!!!

My son was intubated /vent at birth. Trached @ 5 months. In one hospital for 4 months then transferred per our request to another hospital for 6 months. He had BPD also. We had nursing in the home for over 3 years. Vent gone now. Trach gone now. It was a long, hard road for my son & our family. We did not have afternoon nursing. You are going to learn so much & become an expert with the equipment & with your child's care. My son was decannulated 4 months ago & is now in preschool. Miracles do happen. It is hard but you must learn all you can to help your child. Doctors aren't always right. Be your child's strongest advocate. Always try to find answers & never give up trying to get your child all the help they need. Never give up!
