What to do about coughing?

When Sean coughs like this I always give him a cough suppressant like Dimetapp. I just think what I would do for my other kids that are nose breathers. It was scary at first when I did because like you said he needs to cough. I just started with half of what his normal dose would have been. If that didn't help then I would up it a little more. The cough suppressant wouldn't completely take away his cough but would make him more comfortable and be able to get some rest. If the cough lasts that bad much longer I would get a secretions sample taken to see if bacteria is growing. I feel bad for you, I've been there and it's stressful especially if you're getting no sleep. I'll be thinking of you, take care & God bless. Kim

We use over the counter kids cough suppressant also when needed---it helps some and Jake can still cough if his secretions get too bad. Our doctors said that anything regular kids can take over the counter is okay for trached kids too.

Brandin had a cold a couple of weeks ago and his ped. recommended that I give him Robitussin DM. It really helped his cough alot and within a few days he was no longer coughing. Hope your little one feels better soon.
