Stridor during sleep only

My son is two years old and has vocal cord paralysis. He had vocal cord lateralization at age 1 year but we were not able to decannulate. He does great and is plugged when awake but as soon as he falls asleep he begins to stridor. The doctors can't explain this. Anyone with a situation like this?? Also, he loves to pull his plug off and throw it at me (while he giggles) any suggestions??
