View Full Version : Dumbest comment...Ever!

So, my sister's MIL asked her if I was too broke to get "that thing" in Gabriel's neck fixed. Granted, she's older, but seriously????

I also have people ask me on a regular basis if Gabriel eats through his trach.

Oh my, she needs educating!!

I've lost count of how many people asked me if Sam was fed through his trach:eek:

Old Timers...:banging:

I've had some very bright people ask me that too, feeding through the trach I mean. :-) I guess people don't stop to think about the things they say. Luckily none of those people were caregivers!

That is crazy!

I know my MIL keeps asking when Logan's esophagus will grow enough to not need a trach...and I say "windpipe". And she'll say esophagus again...and I have to say "trachea...that's why he has a tracheostomy... "

But, I will say the "too broke to fix it" comment is hands down the winner. Where is that woman's sign?

Wow. That does take the cake, doesn't it.

I've had others ask about eating through the trach too - I think it just doesn't occur to people, because they swallow through their necks, just like they breathe through their necks.

That is a good one!

I seem to recall someone on here posting that the resident once asked in hospital if their child ate through the trach. Um. Yeah. Run for the hills.

A sure giveaway that your DOCTOR is unqualified!!!! Run is right!!! I have had nurses ask the same thing.

And commonly people will think the trach is for eating, actually someone just last night. But I've even had friends that have known us for a long time one day say incredulously "She breathes through that tube?!" uuuuuhhhhhh, why did they think she had it?! I think they actually thought it was for removing secretions & eating.

But too broke to fix that thing in the neck. Wow! That's

Well, that's a new one! Interestingly though, no one has ever asked me (to my face that is!) if Robin eats through his trach - but I was frequently asked if he was "still in that incubator" when he went into the hospital at 7 months and was on the ventilator....we sure have our work cut out for us some days to educate people!

"Too broke" Thanks, that was my laugh of the day:) I have been asked if Isaac eats through his trach also, multiple times!

I don't know whether to laugh or pound on a pillow over that comment. WOW.

01-28-2010, 02:42 PM
geez!! that is quite a comment..
I get the eatting question alot.. but our town is so small, most people know from word of mouth what it is for.

I've never heard that one, or anything negative really. :) The only thing I remember is a long time ago when Eric was still vented 24/7. He was in his double stroller with all the equipment. A little girl (maybe about 4 or 5) went by with her dad and asked "Daddy, what's wrong with that baby"? I didn't catch the dad's response though.

LMAO! That comment is soo dumb but funny at the same time. If only money was in fact the solution to our childrens problems, I think things would be so much easier.

hmm, maybe carry around an old glass jar for coins to fix it.
wow yeah that's a good one

01-28-2010, 11:22 PM
I would have punched her!

Nah , just go with the flow - tell her , yep , just too flat broke , cost us about $ 500.00 a month for a few years to cover it --- Wanna help out with that ?;)

Now, guys, I can totally see why some random guy off the street would think at first glance that one might eat though it. Doctors and nurses. No excuse. But randoms should get the benefit of the doubt, in my opinion. Remember, many of us had not seen a trach before our kids got one and any one of us could have seen one out and about and wondered the same thing. I think the general population associates the neck as for eating, not so much for breathing.

hmm, maybe if they asked, so can they only eat with a straw thru that thing?

02-04-2010, 04:20 PM
Wooooooow. That's a new one!

02-08-2010, 08:51 PM
WOW is all i can say!
