View Full Version : trach change standing up?
Has anyone ever done this?? Mitchell was just standing so nice and watching his movie-it got me thinking about it. I don't think it would be safe as he could run just like that-but just curious I guess.

My mom started changing my brothers trach standing up when he was seven or six? can't really remember will have to call her. He actually would stay still because if he was good she would let him help and he loved doing everything for himself. He was in charge of making his ties tight. If nobody else suggests anything i'll call her and find out.

The time Ayden decanned himself right before the official decan, I put a trach in and he was sitting in his highchair - he was only 2 1/2 and he did OK. I think Angus get's his trach change sitting up - I thought I remember a video clip a while back... maybe it was just the cleaning.

I have changed trachs standing and sitting when I worked with C, so long as he was cooperative it was no throuble. In fact It was so much easier to change standing because when you tried to lay him down he thaught you were going to change his diaper and he hates that.

We do it sitting all the time. (I have my own reasons for doing it sitting up.) It's a little trickier of an angle but the advantage is that the neck is accessible so you can be done super quickly if the ties are already attached to the trach when you make the change.

We, too, do ours sitting up in a chair. I could see us doing it one day standing up and Tommy participating, but not yet:rolleyes: . Some kids handle having their trache out for several seconds-minutes. That's what has lead some kiddos to capping & decan. You know your kids the best. If you decide to try it, let us know how it goes.

emily's too wriggly to do it standing up. we do everything with her sitting up except for the actual take out - put in where we lie her back.

We always changed Amanda's trach while she was standing once she was able to do so, it was just easier, having her look up, gives you a nice clear shot at the stoma.
Good to know-here I thought everyone would freak out about it. :)
I would love to try it-but Mitchell is so impulsive and crazy active, I just don't know what he'd do. His trach changes go well-I do them by myself. Only once was I a bit nervous-but his neck was positioned goofy--I guess that's why I asked, because it seems like the neck is in a better position standing. :) I'll let you know if I get the courage to do it sometime.

Standing up seems to be easier these days for us...I sit in the rocking chair and tell Chase "hands on my knees" and he counts and we change it...Dad started the hands on the knees thing while I was deployed. Believe me I love sitting in the rocking chair better than getting down on the floor...once in a blue moon we have to threaten the "hard way" bundled up in a towel like they taught us in the NICU.

we actually just tried it (the first time) 3 days ago!:D
before, we used to change it when hannah's lying down. but everytime, it was very scary because hannah would struggle. and she often holds her breath. she hates lying down when she's not sleepy. she doesn't like changing diapers lying down as well (so we do it while she's standing).
we thought we wouldn't be able to change her trache this month. we tried everything to make her feel comfortable lying down. we also tried to sit hannah on her high chair, but didn't work.
good thing my husband thought of doing it while hannah's standing. at first, i was hesitant. i thought that would be very risky (in case hannah struggles).
but, it worked! i was holding her while she was watching her favorite video. then my husband took his chance. :) my husband said, it was the easiest trache change he'd done! so, we would do it again next month for sure :)

I've done it alone while Lexi was sitting. She's gotten to the point now she freaks out when you lie her down (we call it "changing table drama"). Lots of times we wait til she's asleep to clean or change. So much easier.

Interesting thread. We've always just changed Dominic's trachy lying down with a rolled towel under his neck for a good angle. Not too sure I'd trust him standing up as I think he'd be too tempted to run off.

Yep, gotta say we moved to sitting changes a long time ago, contrary to what you learn. I would think sitting or standing you have the same angles on the neck. I haven't done it standing Because I would worry that Mitch would start walking away. He is too mobile. While I can change it by myself and definetely do routine cleans by myself sometimes if he is sick or really cranky I don't tempt fate. But he sits in front of the TV for his changes on a normal day. But then I do have an angel child for trache changes!
Only time I ever had a panic was after an upsize and I couldn't get it in sitting. I think I would have been better off with a lie down and neck tilted back. I had a smaller size and redid after I calmed down.
