View Full Version : Downsize question

Do you notice a change when you downsize your kiddo's trach? It seems like it took about a week for her to adjust to her dowsize, however it seems to have cured a great deal of her distention. When she was fisrt downsized, she seemed to be breathing harder and faster. Now she is back to normal. I was just wondering if anyone else experienced this.

We were told to expect a certain amount of adustment after any upsize or downsize. The upsize was a bit rough on Alex, but the downsize was a huge relief to him ... but then he's pretty unusual in that respect, so I wouldn't use that as any kind of guide.
I think what Karin mentioned about downsizing is more the norm than not. If the child is ready to downsize it can be a huge relief--to finally be breathing closer to what is "normal" (nose and mouth). Nathan went from a 4.0 ped after surgery to a 3.0 ped, and he has never done better--managing secretions, heartrate while sleeping is slower, even with a cold things are better.
As is the case with most things trach related...it depends on the child.
