View Full Version : Another humidity question

It's been well over a year since we've had night nursing and it has worked out well for us. However, this is a problem that is making me reconsider.

Alex rolls around a lot in bed, and tends to sleep on her belly. It always ends with her in a tangle of wires, feeding tubes, and vent circuits. The biggest issue with this is little drops of water that make their way into the sensor lines in the vent circuit. It causes the vent to misread the pressure and alarms as if it's disconnected. So if the vent alarms don't wake up Alex, then I end up doing it because she's on her belly and I have to get to the tubes.......

And the thing is just as your climbing back to bed, it alarms again. So I've been up since about 4 and was so aggravated I never fell back to sleep. (of course, now that I'm up, I haven't heard a peep)

Does this happen to anyone else? We use disposable circuits, and have a fisher and paykel humidifier.

Stacey - I avoid this problem the same way I do with the rest of the circuits, I keep it covered (with Jack's sheets). Fortunately (?), Jack doesn't move, so I don't have the problem with the covers coming off from movement. Maybe you could wrap a lightweight blanket or sheet around the top part of the circuits where the sensor lines are. You'd have to use tape or something to keep the blanket/sheet wrapped around. The other thing that comes to mind is using an ace bandage - that would easily wrap around the circuits and stay wrapped. The whole idea is to keep the cold outside air away from the warm air in the circuits.

Hope you find a solution. There's nothing worse than false alarms all night long ... well, actually - "real" alarms all night long are worse. :)

Ann- Ace bandage was a great idea - so far so good!

Thanks

I saw on a C-pap machine that they have this sock sort of thing for the tubing. It has velcro going up the entire length of the hose. I thought that it was a great idea. I asked but they didn't have one for the vent circuit. But I think that the Ace bandage will work too. I will have to try that one myself.
