My son had his nissen about 7 weeks ago. He's gained weight, he's stopped throwing up and he's swallowing better because the reflux is cured. He does get a lot of air in his stomach and we have to vent his G-tube when he gets uncomfortable.

He can eat by mouth, the Nissen is not a total shut off of the stomach....they do this procedure on some adults when they can't control acid reflux any other way and these adults eat by mouth.

It's a tough surgery and another setback, but for us it has been a positive thing.

Hope everything works out for you....all our best to you

If you do opt for it, go with open surgery and not lapriscopic. The lap. has a high failure rate (ALli's lasted only 4 months before coming undone). She can eat orally but wont. Deb

Why don't you get a second opinion. You'll probably find a doctor you feel better about. I don't know a thing about Nissens. Good luck! Sue

With Gaithy's nissen she can eat just fine - if she would just eat more!

AND, I have been told that throwing up is still possible in most cases if there is enough pressure, but Gaithy never has thrown up (she's 3 now). Our nissen has never come undone, but I don't know which type of procedure they did on her. We did have it checked when she was almost two because she was gagging a lot - but that seemed to be mainly because of an inability to tolerate feedings of more than 4-6 ozs. After starting blended foods thru the gtube (instead of Pediasure or formula) her toleration for food volume did increase. She's fine now.
