Jacob's ENT wants to try to decan him again in the Fall:eek: Many of you probably recall how traumatic the first attempt was in March. DH and I are SHOCKED! He said, it will have been 6 months by then and it's just a "growth and development" issue. Jacob is also growing so FAST these days. I feel sick to my stomach at the thought of another trial, but he said that's the only way we'll know. He initially wanted to wait 12 to 18 months - guess he was shocked at how big Jacob is getting.:D

You must be scared but how exciting too. Willl they still remove the trach even with both sides not moving? Always a mixture of emotions with all this stuff!!
Good Luck

Good Luck! I hope he does great. I know how scary these things are but they are exciting too!

Yes, his ENT does not think he will regain movement of his left vocal cord (likely due to his PDA surgery when he was a preemie). He should be able to protect his airway with one properly working cord - it's just a matter of his airway being wide enough.

Wow. Kim. Exciting, but nervewracking, I know! Fingers crossed for Jacob!

Kate- one paralyzed vocal cord doesn't usually result in a trach unless it is in the closed position and there isn't a big enough airway.

In Parker's case, one is still not fully moving, but he controls the movement and the "open" is enough for him to maintain his airway.

Wow; boy can I sympathize. Its a mixed blessing, isn't it? I'm sort of hoping that someone gives us the same news in six months, but I know if they do I would be weak to the marrow of my bones with shaky nerves.

Your ENT sounds like a sensible guy, from what I've read. I certainly hope (and really do believe) that this time will be much better for you.

I have heard from another family (not on this board) that there is a lubricant that can be used to hold a stoma open during a sleep study. Given what happened last time, maybe they can use something like this under the bandage during the decann attempt? Couldn't hurt to ask.

Best of luck, and please, please, please keep us posted.

That is exciting and terrifying I'm sure. Sienna only has one working cord as well. They assure us that she'll be fine with one...

Great news but scary at the same time.... you have a few months to prepare yourself. Just take one day at the time. During that time maybe try to relax and replenish your energy... I think you are going to need it
