Tammy and Parker

I'm Tammy. Mom to 2.5 year old Parker. Parker was just trached a little over 2 weeks ago. This was a very traumatic experience for him. We are all still trying to adjust.

Parker has been dealing with severely obstructive sleep apnea and when his cpap requirements hit a level of 13 for pressure the ENT and cardiologist decided that a trach was the next and necessary step.

Because of Parker's severely obstructive sleep apnea, bronchotracheal malasia, chronic lung disease, aspiration issues and reflux issues he had developed pulmonary hypertension. The doctors believe that by by passing his collapsing airway his heart will not have to work so hard and his PH levels will recede.

Parker is on a vent at night with a pressure setting of 5 and an airflow of 2 liters. For the first time ever he has gone for almost three weeks and hasn't been sick. He has been satting at 100 each night.

Like I said, we are still a bit shell shocked and trying to adapt to all of this.

And we miss that wonderful thing called sleep. sigh.....

Hi Tammy,

Welcome to the group. My trach kid is a Parker too! I can't even imagine a 2.5 year old suddenly being "hit" with this big change. The good news is that there is lots of support here and sooner than you know, life with a trach will just be life.

Editing to add: I just went to Parker's site and I see he is allergic to milk. My middle son is anaphylactic to milk. Parker had to be switched to Neocate at about 5 weeks of age and was recently switched sucessfully to nutramigen. We've not had him tested for allergy yet, but I'm not going to hold my breathe. Nor am I going to give him any dairy!

Best regards, Suzanne

Welcome Tammy and Parker. Glad you found us early on in your 'trach life'. I wish I'd found this site before Sam was trached. Like Parker, Sam was older when he was trached - 19 months! Like you say, it is a pretty scary adjustment to have to make. What I found the worse thing was not being able to hear my baby talk anymore. You have found the best source on the web for support and advice. Feel free to ask questions - the people in the know are the parents who are living this day to day.

Good luck

Welcome! It's a lot to take in, a lot to learn, and a lot of medical supplies, but it gets easier, I swear! :)
