Last night at 3:30am we woke up cuz Mary Elizabeths Oximeter went off. So we took her out of the basinet to calm her down and suction her. My wife thought she may have spit up so we turned on the light (we usually use a dim tv as not to wake her) Mary had a little formula around her mouth. So after I suctioned her I used the cath to clean the formula from in and around her mouth. She started gushing blood and it was so hard to stup. It was coming out her mouth and she was screaming. My wife noticed some blood on her trach so we thought some blood was coming out of that. I thought maybe some got on it from her mouth when it flowed over her face. Her heart rate was really high, she was very upset, she was bleeding. We were very close to calling 911. I was sick to my stomach and scared. I kept suctioning out the blood, and using a clean cath for her trach (which really didnt have blood coming out of it, except maybe what fell in from her mouth). Eventually the bleeding stopped and we managed to calm her down. I checked her lungs with a stethoscope and it was a little crackly so I did a deeper suction, checked again and it was fine. Everything went back to normal at around 4:15ish, and we managed to get her back to sleep. I'm not sure if she was aspirating or where the blood came from. Our ENT said she has a small hemangioma at the base of her tongue, shes bled before out of her mouth for no reason, but not this bad, and its usually a lighter color. I will she how she does today and if anything happens again I will probably take her to the ER.

Sorry I had to vent, I just felt so sick and I couldnt even sleep.
Please Pray for little Mary Elizabeth.

Good Morning,
Hopefully (after a night like last night) if we repeat it enough, it will come true!
Here I was sitting in the pitty pool because I was up all night with kids with the flu. Bless your hearts, you had a rough one.
My prayers are with you today. Â*http://www.tracheostomy.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif

How scary. I hope Mary Elizabeth is herself today and you can avoid the ER.

Well, this morning she seemed to be herself, so thats a good thing. I am think that when I suctioned out her mouth (she has an enlarged tongue btw) that maybe i burst part of the hemangioma or something.

What a nightmare

I was scared as I read your post. I remember nights when I had those scary feelings.

I'm glad to "see" that she's feeling better, and acting herself this morning. You're probably right about opening part of the hemangianoma when you suctioned her mouth. Makes sense.

I hope you have a restful, quiet day!
