Now that I am comfortable doing trach changes, I have been doing trach changes on my own (daddy was upstairs). This change was a little difficult- the trach didn't want to go in right away. She started to cry and her cry just sounded strange to me. It was almost a raspy sound. The good news is that other than being pretty annoyed, there was no stridor when the trach was out. I think she is coming along nicely. She is trached for tracheomalacia.

Oye I hate difficult trach changes. Were you using surgilube? I never did until we had a really bad change where I was hitting resistance. Turned out to be nothing, but I make sure to put a lil' lube on the obturator now.

Was she dry when you changed the trach? That might be why she sounded raspy... and it might explain the difficult change too.

yes...sometimes the tubes just don't sound right. sometimes we wait and wait and wonder, but in the end it's always better to just change it. almost always it sounds fine again and we conclude it must have been the tube or the way it went in. i know that sometimes secretions just get stuck under the tube and make the voice sound funny.

I don't know what was up with her tube. I even had to make sure that I didn't pull out a 3.0 instead of a 3.5. She was crying with the trach tube out, so it was her real cry- It just sounded different than I remember from before the trach. Maybe because she doesn't use her vocal cords much?
