I just wanted to second the mention of making "medical" things look cute, cool, pretty...you name it. After everything else in the past two years - in Dec 2002 we were told Gaithy has a mild to moderate hearing loss in both ears. I was SO dreading the behind the ear hearing aids (BTE's). But, I got on the Web and found that companies make digital MINI BTE's - they are so small and cute (gaithy is pretty small so I didn't want these huge devices). Anyway, they come in several bright colors - and I was immediately set on having hot pink (with clear ear moulds). When we went to Children's in January to pick up the aids and I saw how cute and how pretty they were, I was SO relieved. They do not seem like a "medical" devices to us - I have no problem pulling Gaithy's hair up and letting them be seen! It's nice that there are some new innovations out there.

We have no problem with the mini BTE's - but Gaithy is two years old and they fit her perfectly (as long as the ear moulds are a good fit). I've seen the bigger ones and I know they would not stay behind her little ears very well. Anyway, the MAJOR problem with Gaithy's aids is that she will not leave them in. We've been using sunhats to help keep her hands away, but she's outsmarting us there too. It's frustrating - she doesn't understand that it will help her language development. However, since her loss is pretty small, she can hear pretty good without the aids. She might be missing some soft consonants and stuff, but she doesn't care!!! I can't wait until I can reason with her! http://www.twinEnterprises.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
